La signification de SVART est “noir” en scandinave. Et j’ai toujours eu un faible pour le black metal.
J’ai eu une période, autour de 2012–2013, où je n’écoutais que ça : Mayhem, Gorgoroth, Darkthrone, God Seed, et bien d’autres.
L’idée ici, c’était de créer un musicien de black metal dans un band fictif que j’ai appelé SVART. Pendant que je peignais ce tableau, j’écoutais l’album I Begin de God Seed en boucle.
C’est quand même fascinant : ces musiciens-là, pour la plupart, sont de vrais gentils dans la vie. Ils jouent un rôle quand ils enfilent leur “uniforme”… mais une fois redevenus eux-mêmes, ce sont souvent des gars qui pourraient aller faire l’épicerie avec leur grand-mère.
Diaboliques sur scène et sur disque — mais la grande majorité sont des humains, simples, presque doux dans la vraie vie. Fascinant, non ?

The meaning of SVART is “black” in Scandinavian. And I’ve always had a soft spot for black metal.
I went through a period around 2012–2013 where I only listened to that: Mayhem, Gorgoroth, Darkthrone, God Seed, and many others.
The idea here was to create a black metal musician in a fictional band I called SVART. While painting this piece, I had the album I Begin by God Seed on repeat.
It’s quite fascinating: most of these musicians are actually very kind people in real life. They play a role when they put on their “uniform”… but once they’re back to being themselves, they’re often just guys who could go grocery shopping with their grandmother.
Diabolical on stage and on record — but in reality, most of them are simple, almost gentle human beings. Fascinating, isn’t it?
